The Wolf’s Bane (NetEnt): Overview

With Spinsane still fresh in memory, we fired up The Wolf’s Bane and crossed our fingers in hope of a more dignifying representation of the Canis Lupus family. As it turns out, not only are the graphics leagues above Spinsane, but the simplistic approach of the game is also a welcomed break having just reviewed the significantly more complicated Conan slot.

As you’ll discover, The Wolf’s Bane is made up of parts that have been tried and tested for years, which is true for the industry-standard 5×3, 10-payline format used here, right down to the features and even the werewolf-inspired theme. In other words, innovation and originality has been left at the door to make way for basic, simple, and fun video slot action that just about anyone should be able to enjoy. Or? We’ll see about that. Playable from only 0.10 up to €/£100 per spin, this low to medium variance, 96.74% RTP NetEnt offering comes with a Pick & Click feature with instant rewards of up to 50x. The game also benefits from a free spins round where you’ll play with standard wilds, as well as expanding, spreading, and multiplier wilds.

Set in a medieval village that’s plagued by werewolves, it has a gloomy and uncanny feel to it. With predominantly grey colours, the backdrop is made up of run-down houses, abandoned streets, and dead trees while eerie music and chilling howls add further suspense. On the transparent reels, symbols include blood-stained J to A royal values as well as 4 more rewarding characters represented by a nurse, a gravedigger, a clairvoyant woman, and a scarred soldier. The latter of these is the most lucrative, giving you 50 times your stake for five across a full payline. The man going through the process of therianthropy is the wild – it appears on all reels and substitutes for all regular symbols.

The Wolf’s Bane (NetEnt): Features

Free spins round with expanding wilds in action

There’s only one feature available in the base game in The Wolf’s Bane – the Pick And Click feature. It comes into play when the Bonus symbol, which is represented by a man holding a crossbow, lands on reels 1, 3 and 5. You will then get to choose one of the three bonus symbols which in turn will reveal a cash prize of between 5x – 50x.

Then there is the Free Spins feature which summons the werewolves through the full moon scatter symbols –  3, 4, or 5 of these anywhere in view will give you 10, 20, or 30 free spins respectively. Triggering it will bring up the Wild Board screen with 4 different wilds on display; Regular Wilds, Expanding Wilds, Spreading Wilds, and 2x Multiplier Wilds.

Now, a selector will randomly move between the wilds while waiting for you to hit the ‘stop’ button. Once you do, the selector will come to a stop and highlight one of them to serve as your wild during the free spins round. During free spins, an overlay wild symbol will appear randomly on reels 1-3 in every spin and works the same as the active wild feature. Disappointingly, you cannot land a full screen of wilds and also, the 2x multiplier wilds do not multiply each other. On the upside, however, the free spins feature can be retriggered the same way you trigger it, with no limit.

The Wolf’s Bane (NetEnt): Verdict

If you haven’t figured it out already, The Wolf’s Bane is a clone of another NetEnt slot titled Wild Wild West which, we have to say, is rather disappointing. With that fact established, there’s nothing much to analyze here. What you get in The Wolf’s Bane is an attractive and simple, yet relatively entertaining, low to medium variance slot machine that consistently seems to award wins of around 50-100x quite in the free spins game.

Due to its simple nature and given the fact that the max win peaks at 100x per payline and 500x in total, this is not a slot for cork-sniffers or for those who seek the thrill of landing ultra wins. If you’re looking for a slot that can help with wagering or give you some good value in the form of play time, The Wolf’s Bane is an excellent choice.
