Troll Hunters 2: Overview
It's hard to believe, but the original Troll Hunters slot is nearly six years old. It has aged pretty well too, and if you are a fan or interested in some older, fantasy-style gaming, it is worth a look. So Play’n Go has had six years to put their thinking caps on and dazzle us with a sequel. The results are a follow-up game that is almost exactly the same as the first, but now comes with more challenging volatility and increased rewards. Of course, if you haven't played the debut Troll Hunters or know nothing about it, then the experience will be totally fresh.
Graphically, things have improved from the original, not drastically, but they are better. The symbols are all nicely drawn, and the action takes place against a heroic mountainous backdrop that looks really cold. Think north of the wall (Game of Thrones), and you get the picture. The music is great too. A powerful fantasy soundtrack pumps from the speakers causing excitement to rise along with excitement levels.
Despite the title, trolls do not make much of an appearance in the game until the bonus rounds. Until then, we get three uber-tough female warriors as the lead characters. They make up the most valuable symbols in the game and are worth from 0.5x to 10x the stake for a cluster of 5. One cool thing about them is that if there are five different warriors or more forming part of a cluster, then they pay out from 0.25x to 5x the stake in that scenario. The top pay symbol is the golden wild that returns 1x to 50x the wager. At the lower end of the scale are general Viking symbols – a horn, helmet, sword, hammer, and axe worth 0.10x up to 4x the wager.
To start the hunt, players pick a bet level from 0.20 up to €/£100, and with a solid top prize of 5,000x the wager, big wins are possible. An above-average RTP of 96.5% has been programmed in, so the game is able to dish out a fair amount of wins if the troll hunting goes well.
Troll Hunters 2: Features
One aspect of play that Troll Hunter 2 has fortunately kept is its game mechanic. The slot is played on a 5x5 grid that falls and stacks rather than spins. When a win lands, it vanishes off the screen, and the tiles fall, which can cause more winners to fall into place. Consecutive wins from one spin are treated to a multiplier that rises by x1 each time. When three of a kinds land, the middle tile stays on the grid but turns wild and can substitute for any of the pay symbols.
When warrior symbols form winners they start to fill up the Shield Meter. When it gets full, it sends x2 and x3 symbols randomly onto the board for the cascade to continue.
Lurking behind the symbols, moving up and down is the word BONUS. If wins and falling symbols fully reveal this word, then the bonus game is launched. Players can choose:
- 9 free spins + regular 2x2 troll wilds.
- 7 free spins + x2 multiplier 2x2 troll wilds.
- 5 free spins + x3 multiplier troll wilds.
Troll wilds come into play when the Shield Meter fills up and triggers the Win Spin. On this spin the troll wild lands and guarantees winners due to its mega-size. Fill the Shield Meter during a Win Spin re-triggers the feature but keeps the win multiplier at the same level.
Troll Hunters 2: Verdict
So after all that which one should slot fans play? Well, most players will naturally want to explore the new version but in the end, the main difference is the volatility and potential as the look and feel of both Troll Hunter versions are quite similar. There are some differences in the details, but at their heart, you are kind of playing the same game. Part 2 does win out in the looks department, and the sound effects are an improvement. Gameplay-wise, well, try both in demo mode and see which one tickles your fancy more.
If the original Troll Hunters didn't fire your imagination then there is isn't much in part 2 that will gain your affections. If however, you are already a Troll Hunters fan, or a follower of fantasy, adventure, or Vikings, then you will probably enjoy Troll Hunters 2. As a standalone game, it is a respectable slot indeed, with a good vibe, a decent RTP and extras that come together well. If you want to compare it to other recent, mythological/fantasy slots, it measures up but is outplayed by a game like Age of Asgard. Though Troll Hunters does have a higher jackpot, it lacks the overall power and presence of the Yggdrasil title. Overall, however, Troll Hunters 2 is undoubtedly worth a try, and fans of the original will be over the moon with the chance to relive the adventure all over again with improved graphics and effects whilst hard-core gamblers will enjoy the thrill of the merciless volatility.
If you are a fan of the first Troll Hunters slot, then you will enjoy a sequel that is very close to the original.
