Wings of Horus: Slot Overview

The Egyptian deity Horus was associated with things like the sky, healing, and protection, so it's interesting that in Hacksaw Gaming's slot Wings of Horus, the Ancient Egyptian god is on a mission of vengeance. A revenge party if the game info is anything to go by, which not only sounds scary but also a bit out of character for such a malevolent god. Ah well, such is the power of creativity that Horus stars in a foreboding slot which follows in the footsteps of a prior Hacksaw Gaming release, Hand of Anubis. Wings of Horus is creative on the gameplay side, too, dishing out symbol-transforming Orbs, 2 bonus rounds, bonus buys, and more.

Like Hand of Anubis, Wings of Horus' base game inhabits a largely monochromatic world, a sort of zone that's had all the life and colour sucked out of it. Well, not all the colour, as sprinklings of purple, have been sprayed in various directions, plus the symbols broaden the palette. But black and white reign supreme in this realm until the bonus rounds hit, where blasts of aged gold or verdigris bronze fill the screen in a game which wasn't as creepy as Hand of Anubis but remains a serious, ain't doing this for the lols Ancient Egyptian slot.

Hacksaw Gaming isn't particularly renowned for using ways to win pay systems super often, but Wings of Horus can count itself as an anomaly since it has 7,776 ways to win on its 5x6 grid. The studio is known for making volatile slots, though, and Wings of Horus' 4 out of 5 rating puts it in the medium-high range. Four RTP configurations have been designed to keep your eye out for, and the highest return figure is 96.33%, while the bet range is 10 c to $/€100.

Instead of royals or card suits, Wings of Horus' lower paying symbols are the letters H, O, R, U, and S. They pay 0.3 to 0.5 times the bet for a 5-symbol winning combination. Next up are the 5 higher pays consisting of 5 themed connected symbols. Hit a 5 OAK winning way for them to collect 0.8 to 2 times the bet. Wilds appear in the game to substitute for any regular paying symbols. In the base game, though, wilds only appear through the Orb of the Moon and Orb of the Sun feature. A 5 wild win pays 3x the bet, and only 1 Orb may land per reel.

Wings of Horus: Slot Features

Nestled within these wings are Orb of the Moon and Orb of the Sun symbols, which upgrade other symbols, a Sacred Scripture instant win, then 2 bonus rounds - Revenge of the Pharaoh and Rise of the Falcon. Last but not least are four bonus buys.

Orb Symbols

  • Orb Of The Moon - When an Orb of the Moon symbol lands, it selects all instances of a random symbol on the reels. Next, it replaces all positions of the selected symbols and itself with a higher-value symbol or a wild.
  • Orb Of The Sun - When an Orb of the Sun symbol lands, it selects all instances of 2 random symbols on the reels. Next, it replaces all positions of the selected symbols and itself with a higher-value symbol or a wild.

Sacred Scripture

If the low symbols land in formation to spell 'HORUS' horizontally, a cash payout of 500 times the bet is paid.

Revenge Of The Pharaoh

Hitting at least 3 FS scatters in the base game triggers this feature with 10 free spins. Here, 2 progression bars are displayed beside the grid for the feature. The purple Orb progression starts at level 1. The golden progression bar increases when there is a new win on the grid. Each time the golden bar is completely filled, the purple Orb progression bar increases by 1 level. When the purple Orb progression bar has increased by 1, the golden progression bar is reset to 0.

Before the final spin of the feature, the purple Orb progression bar activates. The number of levels that are filled in the purple Orb bar equates to the number of Orbs, either Moon or Sun, that land on the final spin. Up to 5 Orbs can land at the same time. Hitting 2 FS symbols grants +2 free spins, while hitting 3 FS symbols grants +4 free spins.

Rise of the Falcon

When triggered by landing 4 FS scatters in the base game, 10 free spins are awarded. The rules are the same as Revenge of the Pharaoh, except the purple Orb profession bar starts at level 2.

Bonus Buy

Clicking on the bonus buy button displays these four choices up on the screen: BonusHunt FeatureSpins (3x the bet) - each spin is 5 times more likely to trigger free spins, Orby FeatureSpins (50x the bet) - each spin lands at least 2 Orb of the Moon or Orb of the Sun symbols, Revenge of the Pharaoh (100x the bet), or Rise of the Falcon (250x the bet).

Wings of Horus: Slot Verdict

Like its jackal-headed forebear, Wings of Horus is a rock-steady Ancient Egyptian slot that dwells at the darker end of the scale than the bright, cartoon-friendly, burning brazier in a stately temple affair these sorts of slots often are. Hacksaw Gaming excels at making gloomy, psychological thriller-type games that are just as likely to trigger a subconscious psychological frisson as an obvious visceral thrill - with a splash of neon thrown on top. As well as the games already mentioned, maybe check out Wanted Dead or a Wild, Itero, or Cash Crew if this presentation style tickles your fancy.

On the gaming side of things, despite the reappearance of Orbs, Wings of Horus provides an alternative pathway to potential wins than Hand of Anubis did. Multipliers are out. Neither do they show up on Orbs nor at the bottom of the reels, as in the Underworld feature, which was a real doozy when it was blowing up. The main focus now is on transforming symbols and hopefully getting enough of the same type on screen to make the most of the huge 7,776 ways to win. It's a sweet feature, but one which took a little bit longer to click with than the multipliers from Hand of Anubis. One reason is that when multiple Orbs are on the screen, they may or may not interact with each other. As in, they can pick totally unrelated symbols to convert rather than guarantee stacking conversions on top of each other.

However, it is possible for one Orb to upgrade one symbol type, followed by another Orb upgrading the just converted grouping. Then, it's a matter of brute force ways (hopefully) linking up a good number of matching symbols to turn out a chunky result, and when Wings of Horus is going gangbusters, it can produce payouts of 15,000x in any game phase. After viewing the package, Wings of Horus felt more one-dimensional than Hand of Anubis, lacking the older game's variety. However, it's a potentially explosive game nonetheless that can easily turn on a dime, if it wants to.

Bigwinboard Summary

Wings of Horus is an atmospheric Egyptian slot with explosive potential but one that is slightly less dynamic than its predecessor.
