Atlantis Megaways

Slot Review (ReelPlay)

Atlantis Megaways looks glorious on the surface, but dig beneath the veneer to find a clone of Hypernova Megaways lurking in the deep.

  • Medium volatility Megaways action.

  • Comes with a Pearl Jackpot Respins feature with a top prize of 2,000x.

Atlantis Megaways (ReelPlay): Overview

The Atlantis myth is no stranger to the slot world, but this must be the first time it has been given the Megaways treatment. Australian developer ReelPlay might not be a household name quite yet, but they are quietly churning out some interesting slots. The last we saw was El Dorado Infinity Reels which offered a unique game system that was backed up with solid potential from its expanding reels and jackpots. The latest, Atlantis Megaways, sees a return of the popular game engine. No stranger to Megaways, ReelPlay put it to use last year in Hypernova with mixed results. It must have done the job because Atlantis, being a clone, offers the same gaming experience wrapped in a new outer layer.

It is quite an outer layer too. Right of the bat, you have to admit that ReelPlay can paint a pretty picture. El Dorado was set in a gorgeous, lush environment, and Atlantis is just as striking. The action takes place underwater, as you would expect, and the background is full of mystery and intrigue and an inviting place to spin. This being Megaways we get 6 main reels with up to 7 symbols on each, as well as a 1×4 bonus reel on top. Atlantis takes full take advantage of Megaways capabilities with up to 117,649 win ways when reels are maxed out. There is a good range of bets to kick the underwater exploration off from 20 p/c to £/€100 on offer. Engage up to 999 auto-spins, and it’s time to hold your breath and deep dive.

Symbols are just as well rendered and it is great to see ReelPlay keep the graphical standard high with them. The paytable contains 10 regular pay symbols split into low and high pays. Low pays are your classic 10 – A royals which ReelPlay has flourished with a dash of seaweed for the theme. The high pays include four denizens of the deep – lionfish, seahorse, octopus, and dolphin. Not the traditional symbols you usually get in an aquatic slot which makes a nice change and all are realistically drawn. The most valuable pay symbol is the Neptune looking character that needs only two of a kind to pay, and a line of 6 returns 100x the stake. Players get a little more help from the submerged temple Wild which can substitute for any symbol bar the scatter. As you might guess, the Wild only appears on the top bonus reel.

Cloned features are joined by cloned figures which feed the math model that as not changed. Just like Hypernova, volatility remains locked on medium, and RTP is the same at 96.09%. That combo might float more boats for casual gamers than the harder edge lot. But both will appreciate Atlantis’ decent payout potential, cracked via the features.

Atlantis Megaways (ReelPlay): Features

Jackpot respin feature in play

The most common feature with Atlantis is cascade wins that come with Megaways. This system removes winning symbols from the reels and lets a new batch fall into the empty spaces. More payouts are possible, and the chain reaction continues as long as winners continue to fall.

The most unusual aspect about ReelPlay’s use of Megaways so far is their controversial decision to omit free spins. Instead, players can look forward to triggering a Pearl Jackpot Respins feature in its place. Entry to the jackpot comes via the scatter, which is a glowing treasure chest symbol with a value attached to it. Six of them in view, unlock the feature. The round begins by locking the 6 treasure chests to the reels and awarding 3 respins. If another treasure chest lands it resets the respins back to 3, and the round continues. The bonus game ends when the respins run out, or when every position is covered by a scatter. In either case, the total on the chests is tallied up and paid. This could be cash prizes from 1x to 100x, or, it could be jackpot values:

  • Mini jackpot prize is 10x the stake.
  • Minor jackpot prize is 50x the stake.
  • Major jackpot prize is 250x the stake.
  • Grand jackpot prize is 2,000x the stake.

The Mini and Minor jackpots can be won more than once per feature, but the Major and Grand jackpots are restricted to once only.

Atlantis Megaways (ReelPlay): Verdict

If you have played Hypernova Megaways then whatever your opinion of that one was will more or less be the same with Atlantis. Being a clone, the features, gameplay, and numbers have remained as they were. If you liked Hypernova you will enjoy this; if not, then there is no reason to fire up Atlantis. Graphically, it is superior with a vast, opulent underwater kingdom to explore. Yet slots, like partners, cannot be based on looks alone. Relationships need that inner substance to sustain and keep them interesting. So as pretty as Atlantis is, looks alone won’t be enough to win the naysayers over.

For those that haven’t had a chance to sample Hypernova, let’s peel back the layers of Atlantis Megaways. What it does is fine, but it is held back by a bonus game which would be more at home with a generic Asian themed slot then a Megaways game. No free spins means that players have to settle for Jackpot Respins to get their kicks. Still, you can pick up agreeable rewards with the Grand Jackpot, so it’s not a total write off by any means. Overall potential is quite good, with payouts of up to 8,640 times the stake possible from the watery world.

To sum up, Atlantis Megaways might not be the gold standard Megaways slot, but it offers decent gaming in a pretty environment all the same.
