El Dorado Infinity Reels (ReelPlay): Overview

Due to an association with wealth and riches, the term El Dorado resurfaces every now and then in the gambling world. Depending on which dictionary you are using it can either refer to the myth of the Golden Man or the Golden City. This fabled city was highly sought after by European explorers as they ravaged and plundered their way across South America. To their disappointment they never managed to stumble on the mythical city which probably never existed. But slots players get a crack at it again thanks to Aussie company ReelPlay.

Having been launched in 2014, the developer formerly known as Chance Interactive, underwent a rebranding earlier this year and knocked out a few slots in the process - Hypernova Megaways being the most protruding title due to the use of the Megaways engine which always gets people talking. The latest game to come from the ReelPlay factory, El Dorado Infinity Reels, makes use of an in-house developed mechanic which is actually not all that bad.

El Dorado scrolls and moves and expands, but by default, we get a 3-reel, 4-row game grid set against a South American jungle scene. Waterfalls tumble in the background, and a gentle pan pipe soundtrack plays over the top. The graphic standard is high, the symbols are all original, and the result is a pleasing first impression. Players select bet levels that range from 20 p/c up to £/€25 per spin and stakes are divided by 20 to provide coin value. The game is available on all devices and looks good no matter what screen size you are using.

Winning combinations are formed a little differently than usual. The game rules state all symbols are scatters, but it's not quite like that. Instead of paylines, symbols result in coins when at least 5 or more land on the reels from left to right. Winning combinations can also lead to the Infinity Reels feature we will cover shortly.

The paytable, which should have been made more straightforward if you ask us, is made up of 10 regular symbols - six different coloured gems make up the low pay symbols, while 4 masks are the high pay bunch. The golden mask is worth the most at 5 times the coin value. It's not much, but the expanding reels and progressive multipliers more than make up for low symbol values.

There is also the Wild Native which helps create winners by substituting for all symbols except the Temple. RTP varies from 95.51% - 96.54% depending on how players deal with free spins. The game settings work well with a math model to provide fairly frequent wins during the base game, while still holding back plenty for the features.

El Dorado Infinity Reels (ReelPlay): Features

There is a quite a bit to get through so let's start with the namesake feature, the Infinity Reels. Initially, the game starts with 3 reels. If symbols on the rightmost reel are used in a winning combination, then a new reel is added to the grid. This reel spins, and if it adds more symbols to the combo, then another reel is added. This process repeats indefinitely, until no new useful symbols land. It can lead to some impressive payouts and when the Symbol Multiplier is factored in things really get interesting.

The Symbol Multiplier is progressive and starts at x1, and every new reel added increases the multiplier by +1. Just like the limitless Infinity Reels, there is no limit to how high the multiplier can go either.

The Symbol Multiplier receives a boost during free spins. The Temple symbol is the key and 5 or more in view award 10 Free Spins. Before the round begins, players get three options to choose from – bank, gamble, or play. If free spins are banked then they are not played. Instead, the next time they are triggered the Symbol Multiplier increases by +2 rather than +1. They can be banked three times at the most so the third level comes with a Symbol Multiplier that increases by +3, the forth level +4.

Alternatively, players can gamble free spins. If the gamble is successful the Symbol Multiplier is moved to the next level automatically and free spins begin. If unsuccessful, free spins are forfeited altogether.

Finally, Reel Play has crammed an additional jackpot into the game to add one more tantalising element. In theory, it is straight forward. Simply add at least 12 new reels on one spin to win the jackpot worth 888 times the stake. As the wins and reels stack up, a little box in the top right corner tells you how many more reels are needed to hit the jackpot. Symbol Multipliers do not apply to the jackpot.

El Dorado Infinity Reels (ReelPlay): Verdict

Well, El Dorado Infinity Reels was a pleasant surprise. When you first hear of a slot that includes the words ‘El Dorado’ and increasing win multipliers, Gonzo's Quest automatically springs to mind. While the two might share similarities on paper, they are miles apart in practice. ReelPlay has come up with something pretty unique that is well worth investigating. What makes it work so well is the combination of simple gameplay that belies a stack of clever, and at times profitable, features. When you land a big win, and the reels scroll slowly back, Beethoven's 9th Symphony plays to add a touch of celebration.

Infinity Reels proves to be a nifty concept and some epic moments can be had when it gets on a good roll. The great thing is that it can be just as effective during the base game as free spins. Also knowing that adding 12 new reels will score you a jackpot lengthens the game's shelf life. The option of patiently banking free spins for an insane Symbol Multiplier extends this further. Players who want to go large are also catered for with the free spins gamble option.

Overall, ReelPlay has done a great job. El Dorado is aesthetically well above average and possesses suitably high volatility to go with a potential of up to 6,250 times the stake. Should the Infinity Reels concept prove popular, and there is no reason why it shouldn't - especially with the progressive multiplier, it will no doubt pop up again. In the meantime, its debut outing drives a solid slot, with a lot more to it than immediately greets the eye. Judging by El Dorado, the rebranding exercise has been a success, and it will be interesting to see what the revitalised ReelPlay conjures up next.
