Dr Fortuno (Yggdrasil Gaming): Review

Let's be honest, circuses are not fun, nor have they ever been. Nothing takes the magic away as quickly as when you stare into the cold, dead eyes of a circus animal, does it? For whatever reason, the circus-themed slots tend to be just as soulless as these poor animals, usually packed to the brim with "fun" (useless) features that seem to pay next to nothing. What they have in common is a heavy focus on entertainment, designed to look fun, expected to be fast-paced and to make you forget that you're actually in it to win it.

Thankfully, there are no depressed animals in this travelling freakshow that is led by Baron Samedi's alter ego, Dr Fortuno. It may be a world of magic, but the basic mechanics at play here are rather plain. You got your standard 5-reels, 3-rows and 20-paylines with a bet range that stretches from 0.10 to 100€ per spin.

There are some similarities to other Yggdrasil slots, namely Luchadora Maniacs and Golden Fish Tank, in that you get to pick combinations of modifiers in the bonus, something that makes each free spin session somewhat unique. There's also a Wheel of Fortuno feature where you can win multipliers of up to 5x, extra free spins, cash prizes as well as a chance to trigger a progressive jackpot. If they were aiming for that chaotic feel of a carnival, there's undoubtedly some of that here and you're likely to struggle a bit to make some sense of everything that's happening on the screen. Unless you've read this eminent review, in which case everything will make perfect sense.

It all starts with an animated intro, however, and you know how good Yggdrasil are at those so it's definitely worth watching just to get into it. If you like cool intros, have a look at the Vikings Go To Hell if you haven't already. It's one of the best we've ever seen!

Gambling-wise, you just never know what's going to pop out from the surprise box when you fire up a new Yggdrasil slot, but one thing is for sure - visually, you're going to be in for a treat. Set inside a mobile theatre, known as the realm of curiosities, there is a rather creepy bandwagon calliope sound loop playing the background which sets the mood of this strange show. On the reels, you will come across low-valued purple, green, blue and red potion bottles as well as Dr Fortuno's fully stacked band of misfits consisting of - the Night Twins, the Fire Head and the Water Witch - the former being the most lucrative, giving you 20 times your stake for 5 on a payline.

Dr Fortuno (Yggdrasil Gaming): Features

dr fortuno
Free spins feature

Aside from being the host of the show, Dr Fortuno doubles as a wild symbol, carrying out all the typical duties of replacing all symbols except the scatter. Also, when he appears on the reels as part of a winning combination, he'll nudge to cover the full reel as well as triggering the Wheel of Fortuno feature. This way, you can trigger up to 5 spins on the wheel, one for each Fortuno that appears on the reels. Spinning the wheel you can win the following prizes:

  • A shot at winning the Jackpot
  • Directly winning the Jackpot
  • A cash prize of up to 5 times your stake
  • 2 extra spins on the wheel
  • A multiplier of up to 5x of the total spin

If the wheel stops on the Jackpot Chance, the Jackpot segment of the wheel becomes unlocked, and if the wheel stops on the unlocked field, the progressive jackpot is won. Simple as one, two, three.

The main act of this show is the Free Spins feature, which is triggered when you land 3 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. Starting with 10 free spins, 3, 4 or 5 scatters will give you 1, 2 or 3 modifiers respectively to benefit from in the bonus. This is what's on offer:

  • All low-value symbols removed
  • Multiplier of 2x
  • Extra Fortuno wilds
  • 5 or 10 extra free spins
  • A premium symbol transforming into wild
  • Win both ways

Dr Fortuno (Yggdrasil Gaming): Verdict

Generally speaking, we tend to enjoy bonuses with modifier extras. It allows for dynamic and unique free spin sessions that have varying potential depending on the combination of features activated. If done right, as in Thunderkick's smash hit Wild Heist At Peacock Manor, you're in for a real roller-coaster.

In this medium variance offering, however, it's more like being stuck on a carousel for kids. Typically, when the developer refrains from boasting the max win potential on the splash screen, you know it's bad. To be able to get to the top payouts, you'll have to unlock the 2x multiplier along with at least one extra modifier to have a shot at the 800x max win per single spin. Decent, but certainly not something to marvel at.

All in all, it's a well-designed slot that offers plenty of extras, but the payouts are too weak to offer us any real excitement and to us at least, that's a bit of a deal-breaker. There's always the progressive to hope for, but in turn, 3% of each bet will contribute to the jackpot if activated by the operator hosting the slot.

Fair

Dr Fortuno is a charming slot with a vintage feel that lacks magic.
