Dr Toonz: Slot Overview
In life, as in fiction, there's nothing like a good back story to really flesh a character or set of characters out. We wouldn't have half the understanding of someone like Black Widow without knowledge of her training in the infamous Red Room. If we didn't know who James Howlett's real father was, who could fully grasp Wolverine's goodness, deeply buried beneath all those layers of pain. And so, we come to Dr Toonz from Play'n GO, which on the surface might appear a follow up to Reactoonz or Reactoonz 2. However, in the game world, Dr Toonz is actually a precursor and creator of the Reactoonz. So, if you ever wanted to know how those cute little characters morphed into being, Play'n GO has helpfully filled in the blanks.
Dr Toonz believed that life forms could be created in new ways, and he does this on a 6-reel, 4-row game grid set up like a series of test tubes. Into these tubes, various colourful symbols appear, forming combos using a dynamic payways system, producing 4,096 to 262,144 ways to win. The scientific tinkering takes place in a modern lab that looks like it's beneath the sea, though we could be wrong, littered with various miscellaneous scientific instruments. Extra lols are provided by Dr Toonz himself, who sits next to the game grid as it bubbles away. There's a Reactoonz feel to Dr Toonz, largely due to the multitude of cheerful critters but also due to a similarly fun-loving environment.
The experimentation is made possible on all devices, from smartphones to desktops, offering stakes from 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin. One thing to keep an eye out for is a variable RTP setting, where the most optimal is a 96.25% version. Out of the 'Toonz' range of games, Dr Toonz has a significantly higher max win figure, plus a highly volatile math model to match. Play'n GO hasn't pushed it to extreme levels, yet a rating of 8 out of 10 certainly makes Dr Toonz an unpredictable experience.
Winning combinations hit in Dr Toonz when three to six matching symbols land left to right from reel number 1. This equates to 4,096 ways to win, to begin with, which quickly builds when the dynamic payways start firing. Pay symbols are divided into four one-eyed aliens as the low pays and four two-eyed aliens as the highs. Values are quite low, where six premium symbol combinations are worth 0.5 to 1 time the stake. One last symbol, for now, is the wild, landing on any reel to replace any of the pay symbols. Wilds payout, but only for a line of six which is worth 2x the bet.
Dr Toonz: Slot Features
The features in Dr Toonz have a grid slot feel to them and perform just as effectively, if not more so, on the 6-reel game grid. Extras include cascades, three Quantumeter features, payway multipliers, and free spins.
Winning combinations are removed from the reels via the cascade feature. New symbols cascade into view to fill the empty spaces, potentially forming new wins. This process repeats if new wins are continually created, stopping when no more combinations hit.
On each base game spin, the Quantumeter starts at 0-2 charges. Each winning cascade charges the meter by 1, and 3 charges mean it is full. The fully charged Quantumeter activates when the cascade sequence ends, awarding 1 charge feature per spin or free spin:
- Quantum Wilds: adds 2 to 6 wilds in random positions on the reels.
- Metamorphosis: transforms 5-8 regular pay symbols into another symbol type.
- Disintegration: removes all one-eyed alien symbols and adds 2 wilds to the reels.
Landing 3 or more double helix scatter symbols triggers the free spins feature. When 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatters are in view, the reward is 10, 15, 20, or 25 free spins which cannot be retriggered. During free spins, the Quantumeter starts with 1 or 2 charges, improving the chances of triggering Quantumeter modifiers.
On each spin, keep an eye above the reels, where x2 payway symbols randomly appear. If they do, they double the number of ways to win on that particular reel. Landing an x2 on each reel maxes out payways at 262,144.
Dr Toonz: Slot Verdict
In a similar manner to the life-creating doctor of this story, Play'n GO has brought together elements of several previous games to create the potent mix that is Dr Toonz. There's the Reactoonz connection, of course, but mainly in regards to characters and visuals, as the gameplay is very different. Dr Toonz makes a switch to reels, and while cascades and charge meters provide a snowball element, you don't get the same lengthy win sequences as in the previous grid slots.
This doesn't make the game any less enjoyable, however. Dr Toonz' charge features keep the pace flowing, and combined with payway multipliers, can take the game to places Reactoonz can only dream of. Winning potential, for example, now reaches 22,000x the bet, equating to roughly 4-5 times Reactoonz 1 or 2 (though we are yet to see these big potential PnG releases live up to their stated potential it should be mentioned). A big max win figure is only part of the story, however, and Dr Toonz isn't quite as infectious as its sibling slots could be. Another possible concern is that Dr Toonz faces competition from Play'n GO's own slot Hotel Yeti-Way. The two offer similar reel formats and gameplay, yet the Yeti one comes with more features, as well as nearly 30% extra potential.
However, Dr Toonz continues a slots tradition that has proven hugely popular; therefore, it oozes pedigree and name recognition. It also has the winning looks, great features and win potential to make it a worthy sequel/prequel.
Though Dr Toonz relies largely on brand recognition, the core gameplay does provide bursts of dumb fun.
