Heroes Hunt Megaways Slot: Overview

The saying 'third time's the charm' certainly applies in the case of Fantasma Games. After a somewhat lukewarm response to their first attempts at making use of the tremendously popular Megaways system, they appear to have listened to some of the feedback and managed to come up with what may very likely be their best release to date. Albeit not bad games at all, whereas Flower Fortunes Megaways and Medallion Megaways were somewhat generic in their look and feel, Heroes Hunt Megaways is a completely different beast altogether.

Teaming up with the highly skilled people at Relax Gaming is what might have done the trick. Not only is the game powered by their Silver Bullet platform, but it also appears to have been built using Temple Tumble Megaways as a template. Yes, the two games might be similar, but it doesn't stop Heroes Hunt Megaways from being a rather original, not to mention fun slot to play.

Once again, Fantasma has taken Megaways, tweaked it, and served up something a little different from your usual Megaways slot. A cartoon-style D&D thing full of heroes, treasures, and dragons that starts well, Heroes Hunt Megaways only gets better as the game progresses. Like an RPG, players collect items, that once powered up, unleash it all during a thrilling bonus game.

The game is built utilising 6 reels, with 2 to 6 symbols on each, which can produce up to 46,656 win ways. So not quite Megaways at full power, but plenty of win ways regardless. Instead of altering row height as is the Megaways norm, every tile remains the same size. Instead, a reel can contain normal symbols or blocker tiles that can be removed randomly. Moreover, Fantasma has retained the cascade system which means winning symbols are removed from the reels to let new ones avalanche into place to provide more potential wins on one spin.

Fantasma has designed all-new symbols for the game, giving it a significantly less generic look compared to the other two releases in the series. On the lower side are four coloured gems - dark blue, light blue, purple, and green. On the high side there is a coin, a crown, the archer, wizard, and the warrior. The dragon symbol is best, though only appears during Dragon Spins and is worth 20 times the stake for a combination of six.

As well as choosing stakes from between 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin, players choose which hero they would like to start the game with. There are three and each brings a different modifier with them when triggered. Don't agonise over the decision too much though because the other two heroes can also be unlocked at a later stage. That can happen quicker than you might expect despite the high volatility that the game runs on. What helps is a fairly frequent hit rate of 26.86% and a variable RTP depending on how many heroes are unlocked. With one active, RTP starts at 96.26% and goes as high as 96.53% when all three are in play.

Heroes Hunt Megaways Slot: Features

As mentioned, the first dilemma players face is which character to lead the hunt with. There are three in total and each one brings a different modifier to the party:

  • The purple Skeksis looking wizard brings an Explosion feature which knocks several symbols or blocker tiles off the grid in a 2x2 or 3x3 radius.
  • The lion warrior, bathed in gold, triggers an Expanding Wild feature that covers a full reel similar to the one in Medallion MW. This expanded wild also comes with a multiplier of x1 to x6.
  • The masked squirrel archer flings arrows onto the grid to clear 6-12 symbols or blockers and trigger a Respin.

Whenever the energy field, sword, or arrow symbols land on reels 2-5, they trigger the corresponding modifier mentioned above – if the character is active. At the start, players only have access to the one character’s modifier which they selected. As the game progresses, whenever the wild chest symbol appears it may also award EXP (experience) points which unlock the other characters. Three points are needed for each character to enter the fray.

When all three heroes are unlocked, the game moves on to the next level where players can start collecting key symbols. When 3 have been collected, they activate the Dragon Free Spins feature. During this feature, 10 free spins are awarded to begin with and Dragon symbols are introduced on reels 1-6. Whenever a dragon symbol is destroyed by one of the modifiers, or by an Avalanche, it adds a free spin. When the round concludes, players choose a character to begin the hunt all over again.

One final point about the chest symbol. Instead of awarding EXP points, it can also trigger the Mimic Free Spins feature. This round offers 10 free spins but cannot be extended. The chest symbol becomes wild on reels 2-5, and all character modifiers are in play. At the end of Mimic Free Spins, players return to the base game in the same state it was when they left it.

Heroes Hunt Megaways Slot: Verdict

Kudos goes to Fantasma for keeping up their quirky use of Megaways. It smacks of the previous two they have popped out, but in a much more lucid, not to mention fun, way. It is obvious the team has poured time and resources into getting the most out of the Big Time Gaming license this time around. The result is Megaways at its core, sure, but if you didn't know that beforehand you might not realise it, the game is so fresh. Heroes Hunt captures the spirit of roleplaying games without bogging players down in too many quests and stats. This is all about spinning to win rather than saving the realm from some maniacal horde of orcish invaders.

If you are put off by slots that make you collect items to trigger features, don’t worry, it's not an excruciating slog by any means. Characters were unlocked at a reasonable rate during testing, with keys not too far behind them. Patience can pay off too as the bonus game has the potential to go completely off the hook. The three modifiers naturally work best in tandem, and free spins can build-up, prolonging the feature.

Obviously Dragon Spins are the most profitable part of the game and when it comes to payouts, hefty returns of up to 26,000 times the stake are technically possible. Wins near that level are going to occur near the end of the quest when characters have been unlocked, keys collected, and the Dragon Spins are in full swing. When that happens, the bonus game can be quite a sight to behold, with explosions, arrows, and wild rows coming at you from all directions. A word of warning, however, the game is highly volatile and just because you've managed to move to the next level won't guarantee you'll trigger the free spins any time soon.

As with many games, there are some annoyances. For example, it can be a bit frustrating at times having to watch the modifier animations play out in full although it's instantly obvious that they won't connect. Moreover, chain-reaction wins of more than two are rare and having nearly all tiles removed by the respin feature all too often ended up in a dead spin. In spite of that, Heroes Hunt Megaways is a fine example of a developer powering on against the grain and doing something a little different, yet succeeding to produce surprisingly good results. Gameplay, math model, and potential make this easily Fantasma’s best slot to date.
