Legion X: Slot Overview
After one or two delays, it's here, folks, hot off the Nolimit City press rolls Legion X, a Roman army themed slot decked out in all manner of x-prefaced features, and more – a whole lot more. Students of Roman history are probably well acquainted with the concept of decimation as a form of punishment. That's when every tenth man in a group of soldiers was arbitrarily selected from a line-up and slaughtered. This method was a quick way of dealing with serious infractions amongst a large number of offenders. Legion X is like the opposite to decimation since it is rammed to the gills with features, all set amidst the sort of darkly atmospheric slot the studio is famous for.
We say darkly, but before squeamish players have flashbacks of Mental, just know Legion X isn't quite so grim. There's a definite edge to the game, though, as the action takes place on a dismal grey day, perhaps either in the aftermath of a battle or in the nervous moments before one kicks off. In their ever-creative manner, Nolimit has ingeniously tapped into a more primal vein than a lot of Roman-themed slots do by exploring some of the 'barbarian' elements the Romans brushed up against. Legion X might not have the lurk of Das xBoot or the menace of Mental, yet there's a definite creep that mixes well with the initial excitement of putting a new Nolimit City slot through its paces.
The studio does like to experiment with reel setups, here utilising a 5-reel game grid laid out in a 2-3-2-3-2 formation. In the beginning, this arrangement provides 72 ways to win, though both ways and reels expand at later stages of the game. The RTP comes in a variety of settings as well, starting with a max default value of 96.04%, increasing as the bonus buys increase in cost. We probably don't need to mention this, but volatility is rated at 10 out of 10, or 'Extreme' to use the studio's own words. After what we've seen Nolimit City slots do this year, such a setting can be a blessing or a curse depending on which side of the math model a player falls. The last few numbers, for now, are stakes which range from 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin, while the game may be played on any device.
Winning combinations are formed in Legion X when matching symbols land on the grid from the leftmost side on adjacent reels. Making up the regular paying symbols are five stone cut 10-A card royals worth 1-1.1x the bet for five of a kind, then four menacing-looking barbarian characters and a Roman legionary as the five premiums. Landing a full five of a kind premium combination is worth a payout of 1.2 to 2.5x the bet.
Legion X: Slot Features
If you're tooling around looking for a feature-rich game, then be sure to put Legion X on the list. Its base game benefits from several special modifying symbols while boasting no less than four different free spin bonus rounds.
Wilds are where the first 'x' feature comes into play, this one being xNudge Wilds. Wilds are stacked and always nudge to become fully visible when landing partly in view. Each time a wild nudges, it increases its multiplier by +1. If more than one xNudge Wild is used in a win, the applicable multipliers are added together first before being applied to any prize money.
These wilds land only on the first or last reel. When an Infectious Wild lands, it converts all instances of a randomly chosen low pay symbol into wilds on the three middle reels. Landing 2 Infections Wilds converts all low symbols into wilds on the three middle reels.
These symbols also only appear on the first or last reel. xWays symbols transform into 2-4 instances of the same pay symbol type, increasing the number of win ways in the process. Landing 2 xWays symbols triggers Infectious xWays. Symbols on the middle three reels that are the same as the revealed xWays symbol also expand to the same size.
xWays and Infectious Wild
Landing an xWays symbol and an Infectious Wild symbol triggers both modifiers so the middle three reels are converted into Infectious xWays and wilds.
Legion X Spins
This feature is triggered when 3 bonus symbols land on the three middle reels, awarding 8 free spins. Firstly, reels 1 and 5 are given an extra row, and any win multiplier created by xNudge Wilds persists for the duration of the feature. When landing an xWays or Infectious Wild, an additional free spin is awarded. Or, if 2 special symbols land on reels 1 and 5, the feature is upgraded to an enhanced bonus mode.
Legion X Equestris Spins
Should 3 bonus symbols land at the same time as 2 xWays symbols, then 10 free spins are awarded. For this one, reels 1 and 5 expand to 4 symbols in height, creating an X shape. Again, xNudge multipliers do not reset between free spins, except this time, xWays symbols are sticky, meaning Infectious xWays on each spin.
Legion X Fretensis Spins
This feature is triggered when 3 bonus symbols land along with 2 Infectious Wilds. The rules are the same as Equestris Spins except that the Infectious Wilds are sticky, meaning they convert all low symbols to wilds on each spin.
Legion X Gemina Spins
Triggered when 3 bonus symbols land in conjunction with 1 Infectious Wild symbol and 1 xWays symbol - 10 free spins are awarded on the expanded game grid with a persistent win multiplier built by xNudge Wilds. Here, the 2 special symbols on the outer two reels are sticky, so players benefit from low symbols to wild conversions and Infectious xWays on each spin.
There is a lot to experience in Legion X, and Nolimit City allows players to go straight to each of the bonus rounds if they cough up the dough. The feature buy options are 8 Legion Spins, 10 Equestris Spins, 10 Fretensis Spins, or 10 Gemina Spins for the cost of 70x, 300x, 750x, or 1,200 times their stake, respectively.
Legion X: Slot Verdict
After the complexity of slots like Das xBoot, or even Evil Goblins to an extent, Legion X came across as a rather straightforward game. Well, straightforward for Nolimit City, which still means it's worth spending a bit of extra time on the paytable to digest everything. However, it's also possible to just dive right in and pick things up as you go along, unlike Mental, which had some players scratching their heads after extended research into the rules and a solid playthrough. Legion X, by contrast, is like fighting a battle for the legions - chaotic to be sure, but with a measure of control that the Romans were famous for.
Features-wise, Legion X might be a slight overload in the beginning, yet it doesn't take long to clock which symbols land where and what their functions are so you can sit back to enjoy the carnage. Nolimit City has proven masters of reusing older features, making slight adjustments to them, combining them with others and coming out the other side in an intensely new experience. Legion X is a real who's who of some of the studio's classic hit features, having shown up in games like those previously mentioned, as well as Barbarian Fury, San Quentin and East Coast vs West Coast, to name a few. In Legion X, they fire off as spectacularly as ever and scoring special sticky symbols in free spins can create some supremely satisfying mayhem.
As to payouts, Nolimit City has pulled the max win figure closer to earth than some others they've done recently, and to be honest, this is no bad thing. The most you can squeeze from Legion X is an impressive 31,000x your stake, and it's nice to see the studio doesn't feel the need to outdo themselves with each new release. The positive corollary is that the theoretical chance of hitting the max win is 1 in 36 million spins.
At the time of testing, few if any providers provoked as much anticipation and excitement over a new slot as Nolimit City. They must feel a ton of pressure on their shoulders to keep this going, surely? Anyway, somehow, someway, the studio manages to knock it out of the park just about every time, and Legion X is no exception. It's got the mood, the 'tude, and most importantly, the gameplay to entertain players up for a volatile Roman Empire themed challenge.
Legion X reaches deep into Nolimit City’s arsenal of tricks to marshal an assault that will slam you with everything it’s got.
