Superstars: Slot Overview

Question, have you ever watched an awards ceremony, like the Oscars and been enraptured by the star power and talent on display or repulsed by a perceived phoney backslapping look at us we're famous attitude? If you're in the first camp, we've got a slot that might have you going gaga. Superstars is the slot in question, and comes from software provider NetEnt. Like an award ceremony, or similar to Nintendo's All Star games, NetEnt has gathered a group of their most beloved star characters and jammed them into a single online slot and accompanied each one of them with their own feature.

As to the stars, the big names on show here are Finn, Gonzo, Lady Pig, Brute, and a star from the studio's iconic Starburst slot. Bringing together five colossal characters has got to be easier when they are from casino games compared to real life. Actors in the seventh Fast & Furious movie made headlines for apparently including limits in their contracts over how much punishment they would take on screen. Some drew the conclusion that none of the three male leads wanted to come off weaker than the others. Fortunately, there's none of that going on in Superstars, where the characters happily share space on a 5x5 game grid, backgrounded by a big rainbow for this NetEnt family reunion.

Superstars has been designed to run on any device, and lets players pick stakes of 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin. It's not a particularly massive slot; potential is decent enough but not mind-blowing at 4,596 times the stake, while the math model runs medium/high volatile. The game may be found with three RTP options, maxing out at 96.08% before dropping to 94.06% or 92.01% for the two lower models.

Lining the 5x5 grid are 45 ways to win, occurring when matching symbols hit from the leftmost side on consecutive reels. 10 to ace card ranks are used as the low pays before the characters appear as the high pays – Lady Pig, Finn, Brute, Gonzo, and the Starburst icon. Wilds don't land in the base game but scatters do; let's see where they lead us.

Superstars: Slot Features

Not a lot out of the ordinary really happens in the base game, but this can change when at least 3 diamond symbols are collected. Doing so triggers the free spins round, which is a mix of hold 'n win, with the reels surrounded by a board game.

Once triggered, 3 spins are awarded, with the triggering scatters converted into random multipliers on the reels. When new multipliers land during the feature, the number of spins is reset to 3. If a Dice symbol was on reel 5 when activated, it substitutes for a scatter, and players get to roll a Dice to move a token around the game board. Extra dice can randomly land on the reels or be won from some of the features. When a Dice is collected, it is rolled to determine how many steps around the board the token moves. Landing on certain game board squares triggers these features:

  • Finn feature – adds +5 to up to five multiplier prizes on the reels, which are then combined into 1, meaning more multipliers are able to land.
  • Gonzo feature – multiplies up to 24 random multipliers prizes by x2, x3, or x5.
  • Miss Banks feature – places up to 15 random multiplier prizes onto the reels worth up to 5x. If the new prize lands on a prize already there, the values are added.
  • Space Wars feature – three of the highest multiplier prizes are cloned, and three extra respins awarded. Only cloned prizes may land on the respins.
  • Starburst feature – places a vertical stack of three equal multiplier prizes worth 2x to 5x.
  • Extra Spin feature – landing on the top right square of the board increases the spin count up to 4 rather than 3. When spins are reset, they reset to four from then on.
  • Extra Life feature – manage to go all away around the board grants an extra life in the form of a heart. The next time the spins counter hits 0, the life resets it to the max number – 3 or 4.

Wheel Game

If the token lands on a Wheel square, players get to spin the wheel for one of these prizes:

  • 1 additional dice.
  • 2 additional dice.
  • +1 - All Multiplier prizes on the reels increase by +1.
  • Upgrade – adds 1 times the bet to all blank squares on the game board. If the token lands on one, the values of multiplier prizes on the reels increase.
  • Random – awards one of the Finn, Gonzo, Miss Banks, Space Wars, or Starburst features.
  • Replay – replays the next Bonus feature if one is triggered.

Final Game

If all of the spaces on the reels are filled with multiplier prizes, the Final Game is triggered. The squares on the game board are given values of 25x to 1,000x except the top right and bottom left corners which award Dice if landed on. Players enter the Final Game carrying the number of Dice they had in free spins. The maximum number of free spins plus the number of hearts is transferred into Dice for the Final Game. If you have an unused Replay, the first Dice roll number is doubled.

Buy Feature

Players keen and able to dive straight into the bonus round with the help of the bonus buy option can do so at the cost of 150x the bet total bet.

Superstars: Slot Verdict

If you're familiar with the characters in Superstars, it's a bit like the line from the Cheers theme song, 'Where everybody knows your name', in reverse, or some such thing. At times, when tv shows do an episode made up of snippets of past episodes, they can come across like wafer-thin filler, but Superstars, fortunately, doesn't feel like that. Instead, you get the impression that the NetEnt team might have had a bit of fun making this, running through their extensive back catalogue, trawling for popular characters they could rope into a single all-star slot and see what might happen.

The result is a game that should be rather appealing to players who can name the stars. It's not mandatory to know all of them to enjoy the game, of course, but it might help. The base game is a little so-so since there really isn't anything special to it; NetEnt has saved the creative juices to pour them into a fairly elaborate bonus round. In a nutshell, the bonus round is a hold 'n win feature with a stack of extras to work your way through, depending on how Dice are won and rolled. As alluded to before, Superstars isn't a massive game, but when the stars are performing and the multipliers are adding up, it can go all the way through to 4,596 times the stake. Bigger than some of the games its characters are drawn from, smaller than others.

Add up all of the bits, pieces, and characters, and you've got a pretty fun game on your hands. If you consider slots like Money Train 3 to be the acme of hold 'n wins, then Superstars may come over a bit lite. Still, Superstars isn't trying to compete in that division, aiming instead for a more general audience or players nostalgically warmed by the thought of having so much online slot star power brought together in one place.

Superstars is capable of delivering bursts of entertainment, but it falls short in a few key areas.
