Burn 'Em Up (Barcrest): Overview
For now, Barcrest may be basking in the success of its Rainbow Riches Megaways slot, but the studio's transition from land-based to online hasn't been all that exciting. Looking at some of the 2019 releases, with the exception of Lady of Avalon (even Barcrest can't fail completely at creating a 'Book' clone), games such as Soldier of Rome, Super StarTurns, and Pyramids of Giza are all some of the worst we've had to review this year. If parent company SG Digital had not acquired a Megaways license, Barcrest would still be firmly based in the backwaters.
Developed by UK studio Barcrest and powered by the SG Digital platform, Burn 'Em Up is a 5-reel, 10-payline slot with a fiery fruit slot theme. It's a simple offering with only one added extra - a free spins bonus where up to 24 spins can be triggered and where symbol upgrades can result in wins of up to 5000 times your stake. Playable from 0.10 to £/€500 per spin, you can access this game on your computer, tablet or mobile device.
As is the case with the majority of Barcrest's fruit machines, Burn 'Em Up is an uncomplicated slot that sticks to a simple architecture, both visually and in terms of gameplay. With a scorching wallpaper serving as the backdrop for the game and with the reels engulfed in flames, you'll see the usual collection of classic fruit machine symbols on the reels. Lowest in value are the watermelons, plums, oranges and cherries, which are followed by more rewarding lucky sevens that come in various combinations. The most rewarding of the standard symbols, however, is the king's crown, giving you 100 times your stake for a five of a kind combination. The malevolent jester is the wild, it replaces all other symbols bar the scatter and will pay you 500 times your stake if you land five on a full payline.
Burn 'Em Up (Barcrest): Features
Burn 'Em Up only comes with one feature - the Free Spins Bonus. This is played when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols anywhere in view simultaneously, giving you 12, 18 or 24 free spins respectively. Once in, you'll benefit from symbol upgrades where you'll see winning symbols being upgraded to the next symbol in line on the paytable. If you land 3 or more scatter symbols during the bonus, the feature is re-triggered.
Burn 'Em Up (Barcrest): Verdict
Although the gameplay is different, it's appears Burn 'Em Up is built on roughly the same mathematical template as Lady of Avalon. Instead of a special expanding symbol, however, you benefit from symbol upgrades in the bonus. The potential is also more or less the same, both in the main game and in the bonus feature. Same goes for the volatility which is quite high.
Burn 'Em Up isn't a very fun slot to play. It's rather ugly to look at and the bonus is not compelling enough to make up for the bland design. It's hard to find any good reason to play a slot like this with so many innovative, fun and strong titles available on the digital shelves these days. If you do feel the urge for some fruit machine action with a modern twist, you're better of playing Blueprint's Mystery Spin Deluxe or even ELK's new Win Win slot.
