It's quite different to its predecessors which gave gamblers the impression they were in the slammer, shuffling around the yard, trying not to get shanked in the back by rivals or brutal math models. Change is good, no arguments there, but San Quentin Manhunt doesn't have the same immersion levels after panning the camera back to such a safe distance. Safe is a subjective word in a Nolimit City slot, though, and rest assured, San Quentin Manhunt is no easy-going stroll around a prison yard.

San Quentin Manhunt is played on a 6x5 main gaming area, where, in the base game, 18 positions are initially unlocked. Winning combinations are formed when 7 or more matching symbols land in the reel area. Winning symbols vanish, triggering a drop allowing new symbols to fall in for another chance to win. Players may stake $/€0.20 to $/€100, and can expect a highly volatile math model, with an RTP at best of 96.15%.

The object symbols are toilet paper, handcuffs, shanks, jars, and soap as the lower paying symbols, while five Prisoner symbols are the high pays. Winning combinations of 7-9 OAK pay 0.1x to 0.5x, going up to 0.5x to 3x for a 15+ OAK winning hit.

Features in the game include Multiplier Blocks, Enhancer Cells, a couple of bonus rounds, Nolimit Boosters, and a range of bonus buys.

Multiplier Blocks

Each position on the reel has its own multiplier that applies to the symbol's win. The multiplier increases when the position is part of a win, is hit by xSplit, or is affected by Cell Search. Each increase doubles the multiplier up to x128 in the base game.

Enhancer Cells

On the top and bottom of each reel, there are locked Enhancer Cell positions. When unlocked, they reveal a Prisoner symbol or any feature symbol except the scatter:

• Cake Buster: Unlocks a reel position and reveals a wild. If no locked positions remain, a random position is turned into a wild.
• xWays: Transforms into 2-4 instances of the same Prisoner symbol. All xWays reveal the same symbol if there is more than one of them.
• xSplit: Doubles all Multiplier Block values on its reel and converts to a Prisoner symbol.
• Yard Dealer: Selects an object symbol on the reels and converts it to a higher paying symbol. It then converts itself into a Prisoner symbol.
• Cell Search: Activates when there is no win, collecting the lowest paying object symbol, adding a multiplier to itself for each collected symbol, then converts into a wild. The multiplier values on collected positions are doubled.

Guard Tower Bonus

Landing a scatter symbol in the main game unlocks the Enhancer Cells on its reel. Hitting 3 scatters triggers Sewer Escape Spins, or hitting 4 scatters triggers Manhunt Spins.

• Sewer Escape Spins: Before the round starts, Bonus Setup Mode determines the number of spins. Each landed +1 symbol adds one spin, for a minimum of 6 spins. All locked reels get a random sticky multiplier of x2 to x16. All unlocked Enhancer states carry over from the main game, and Multiplier Block values do not reset between spins. Values are capped at x128. Hitting 2, 3, or 4 scatters awards and an extra 2, 3, or 4 free spins, respectively. Unlocked reel positions stay unlocked between spins, too.
• Manhunt Spins: In addition to Sewer Escape Spins' mechanics, Multiplier Block values are capped at x512. Corner Enhancer Cells unlock once all locked positions on the reels in their respective corners are unlocked.

Nolimit Boosters & Nolimit Bonus

For 2.5x, the Bonus Booster guarantees at least 1 scatter, while at 10x, the 2x Bonus Booster guarantees at least 2 scatters. The 2x Bonus + Open x64 Booster costs 150x to guarantee at least 2 scatters and initial multipliers of x64 on all unlocked reel positions. At 3,000x the 2x Bonus + All x128 Booster guarantees at least 2 scatters and initial multipliers of x128 on all reel positions. From the bonus buy section, players can buy Sewer Escape Spins for 100x, the Manhunt Spins for 500x, or Lucky Draw for 300x the stake.

San Quentin Manhunt: Slot Verdict

San Quentin Manhunt came across as much of a bold evolution of the monolithic series as a chance to blend it with Nolimit City's experimentation in the scatter pays, grid multiplier scene. So while this move aligns with current industry trends, the switch may divide long-time fans as much as it excites them. In a nutshell, it's as if the studio collected pieces of San Quentin and Duck Hunters, then spliced them together in maximum security prison theming. By shifting from the immersive, ground-level chaos of its two predecessors to a top-down view, the game sacrifices some of the gritty, claustrophobic atmosphere that made earlier entries so memorable, though the new angle does suit the way the new mechanics unfold.

The nucleus of San Quentin Manhunt's gameplay is entertaining, and it's not for nothing that scatter pays win systems and grid multiplier features are so popular. Bringing the two together has been done before, but San Quentin Manhunt merges the two components well, and a bunch of extra elements enrich the ride. Key amongst them are Enhancers, including a couple of x-Mechanics thrown in for good measure. Winning potential is relatively low for a San Quentin slot, but massive for a game like this at 46,532x the bet. Manhunt Spins is one of the most conducive places for this to occur, since the Multiplier Block cap is drastically loosened in that phase.

Certain gamblers who enjoyed comparable slots like Sugar Rush Super Scatter, or Sweet Rush Bonanza, might not as easily gel with San Quentin Manhunt. Rather than being user-friendly, bright and inviting candy slots, San Quentin Manhunt is a Nolimit City production that steps up the challenge as well as the complexity, and may require a lot more moving parts to converge to produce something really special. But players who enjoyed Duck Hunters and are curious to see how the SQ range has evolved owe it to themselves to have a try. All in all, San Quentin Manhunt wasn't great in the way the two that preceded it were, but it is a clever, big-numbered cluster pays slot with a mean-minded prison break attitude, nonetheless.
