Rick and Morty Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Overview

If you're into the Megaways genre of slots, Blueprint Gaming's catalogue will undoubtedly have you set for an evening of slotting action - or at least for as long as your balance allows you to keep those reels spinning. With hugely successful titles such as Return of Kong Megaways, Primal Megaways, Gods of Olympus Megaways and Genie Jackpot Megaways, Blueprint have repeatedly proven their ability to engage slots enthusiasts. From time to time, they're also known to deliver branded games based on acclaimed TV and movie franchises. Having secured a deal with Cartoon Network, Blueprint Gaming is now ready to unleash a title that will have many of its competitors drooling - Rick And Morty Megaways.

Booting up the game, it instantly becomes obvious that you're going to be in for an interesting ride even if not familiar with the dynamic duo that it's based on. No corners were cut with the construction of Rick and Morty Megaways, quite the contrary, the excellent build standard is evident throughout and the wizards at Blueprint Gaming have fine-tuned each feature and pixel to perfection. All the stops have been pulled out to create a slot experience that flows seamlessly between functions and features, all with a satisfying potential on top.

If the line ‘wubba lubba dub dub’ means nothing to you, then a few words about the theme might be in order. Rick and Morty is an adult-orientated animated series running on the Adult Swim block from the Cartoon Network late night. Rick Sanchez is a nutty scientist, while Morty is his grandson. The pair get up to all sorts of surrealist adventures, in a show bathed in irreverent humour and bizarre stories. It’s a pretty niche show, but popular, and it works surprisingly well to drive a slot.

What also helps drive things is the Megaways game engine on loan from Australian developer Big Time Gaming. It brings with it 6 reels with 2-7 rows on each, as well a special 4 symbol horizontal row across the top. Rows alternate on each spin which means wins ways fluctuate up to 117,749 when fully expanded. It also possesses a cascade feature which can produce multiple winners on one spin - it does this by removing winning symbols from the reels and letting new ones cascade down for more chances.

The symbols that make up the paytable are split between low pay royals (9-A), and high pay in-theme icons. In ascending order, Blueprint has rendered that green rock with the parasite eggs, two shards (must’ve missed that episode), then Morty, followed by Rick at the top. Rick is the most valuable regular symbol, where 6 of a kind return 50 times the stake. He also pays when two of a kind or more. The rest need three or more to create a winning combo, and the WILD symbol is on hand to help with this.

The wild only lands in the bonus positions above reels 2, 3, 4, or 5, and can substitute for any regular pay symbol. The paytable also informs players of a higher than usual RTP of 97.05% (with the bonus engaged), or 96.55% otherwise which is excellent at this day and age where we've seen the RTP slowly creep downwards. Mix it all up with a high volatility, and big rewards and things are looking good from a technical standpoint.

Rick and Morty Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Features

Bonus screen

When it comes to features, Rick and Morty Megaways isn’t short of those either. Along with cascade wins comes a bunch of random modifiers and full-blown triggered extras to keep the game flowing and interesting. First up are Mystery Symbols which can appear in any position. When they land on the reels they all change to reveal the same matching symbol to increase your chance of landing winning combinations.

Things heat up when the scatter gets involved. The bonus symbol is the scatter which can land in any position except on the bonus reel. If 4 land (each additional scatter awards 5 extra spins) they trigger the feature picker which has 4 options that players can choose from:

  • Pickle Rick Free Spins – A round of free spins with an Unlimited Win Multiplier that starts at x1 and increases by +1 with every cascade.
  • Federation Wild Spins – on each spin, positions on the bonus reel are highlighted. If there are symbols in that reel below that match the highlighted symbol, they are turned wild. If it is wild that is highlighted, then the whole reel turns wild and can receive a multiplier to go with it. This game contains Federation Scatter symbols, and three or more add additional free spins.
  • Vindicator Free Spins – this round includes symbols with instant prize values and Special symbols. Every special symbol that lands collects all of the prize symbols in view. If there is more than one special symbol in view then each one collects the amount present on the special symbols.
  • Mystery Free Spins – spin a wheel that has combinations of free spins and bonus rounds on its segments. The wheel will land on one of the features mentioned above and award between 5 and 50 free spins. The more scatters that triggered the feature picker, the higher the free spins will be on the wheel.

During bonus games, scatters continue to appear on the bonus reel and 3 will award 5, while 4 will award 10 extra spins.

Lastly, and where available, the game may also come with a Bonus Buy option. This feature buy option takes players directly to the Mystery Free Spins Wheel with 5, 10, 15, or 20 free spins up for grabs. The cost for this short cut is 150 times the total bet.

Rick and Morty Megaways (Blueprint Gaming): Verdict

Blueprint Gaming don’t disappoint. Rick and Morty Megaways is a highly polished slot that spared no expense during production. The graphics and animations are top notch and capture the spirit of the original cartoon perfectly. In the hands of its creator, Megaways here runs as smoothly as it possibly gets.

On the bonus side, there is a good variety of features for players to experiment with and figure out a favourite. It’s a tough choice. Federation Free Spins work well when those full reel wild multipliers are boosting win ways. Vindicator Free Spins come into their own when several Special Symbols are working in tandem to hoover up the instant prizes, which is always fun. In short, it’s hard to pick a favourite. Whichever one you go for has its rewards that have been capped at 50,000 times the stake or £250,000 for a single session, so plenty to play for.

So Rick and Morty Megaways might not be the next stage in the slot evolution, but the fact that we are even thinking seriously along those lines shows what we have come to expect from Blueprint's line of Megaways releases. Overall, it’s hard to fault, the theme was an inspired choice, the math model’s finely tuned, and it has a bunch of superb features that players can choose from and excellent potential on top. And what would Rick Sanchez think of that assessment? Well, in his own words ‘“I’m sorry, but your opinion means very little to me.’

Goddamn I love Rick n Morty. Game looks cool, I would rather see they merged those freespins features so we could get instant wins+multipliers >:D

EDIT: also Grats to Blueprint for getting a 91%!! Been a while. From a glance I’d personally give this 8/10 but I’ll trust the review and give it a go!

Also, in the clip it looks a very laggy in the cutscenes, like when Rick falls out of the portal. Is that how it is ingame or is it the video? Or me?

This looks super awesome. I’m glad they took the Megaways approach with this title and not the boring 5-line set up like they did with Beavis And Butthead.

Doesn’t look that polished at least on the video tbh, animations look clunky and cut-offs are off. The slot looks cool tho.

Like Vismund said I think it’s more of a 80%-ish slot rather than 90%+. This game doesn’t exactly break any new ground like for example Bonanza did. But then again, people will probably go crazy over this. Im sure Rick And Morty got some sort of cult following. Also, it would have been interesting to hear how the discussions went between Cartoon Network and Blueprint 😛

It’s a great slot for sure but it doesn’t really differ that much in terms of gameplay compared to their other megaways stuff.

I have to say, the design work is top notch but the game is the same old drivel that blueprint has been releasing since they got their megaways license. It’s like they stopped trying. I can bet my ass they recycle the exact same mathematical model for every game.
